A worked example

A question from the bank with its answer and the reasoning behind it. Every practice question comes with an explanation like this one.

An Agile Release Train consistently plans to 100% of its capacity every Planning Interval and consistently misses its objectives. Which Lean-Agile principle is being violated?

  • ABase milestones on objective evaluation of working systems
  • BAssume variability, preserve options(correct answer)
  • CUnlock the intrinsic motivation of knowledge workers
  • DApply systems thinking

Why

Planning to full capacity assumes no variability, and knowledge work always has some. Queueing behaviour is non-linear: utilisation near 100% makes wait times rise sharply, so the train has removed its own ability to absorb the unexpected. Preserving capacity is preserving options.
