A worked example

A question from the bank with its answer and the reasoning behind it. Every practice question comes with an explanation like this one.

A forecast made three Sprints ago is now clearly wrong. What should the Product Owner do?

  • AMaintain the original forecast to avoid appearing unreliable
  • BUpdate it with the current evidence and communicate the change and its cause promptly(correct answer)
  • CWait until the deadline approaches before revising it
  • DReduce scope quietly so the original forecast still appears to hold

Why

A forecast is a statement about what is currently known, and revising it as knowledge improves is the point of empiricism. Reliability comes from updating early and explaining why, not from defending a superseded number. Holding it (A), delaying (C) or silently cutting scope (D) all trade a small early cost for a much larger late one, and each destroys trust when discovered.
