A worked example

A question from the bank with its answer and the reasoning behind it. Every practice question comes with an explanation like this one.

How much of a Product Backlog should be refined in detail at any time?

  • AAll of it, so the team can plan any item at short notice
  • BEnough that the next Sprint or two can be planned, with detail decreasing further down the order(correct answer)
  • COnly the items in the current Sprint
  • DA fixed proportion agreed with the Developers

Why

Refinement is just-in-time. Detail near the top enables planning; detail far down is waste, because ordering will change before those items are built and the analysis will be redone. Refining everything (A) is the most common source of wasted analysis, and refining only the current Sprint (C) leaves Sprint Planning without ready work.
