PSM I: Scrum Theory practice questions
54 questions on Scrum Theory, one of the 8 areas assessed in Professional Scrum Master I. Untimed, with an explanation after every answer.
This topic tests empiricism: knowledge comes from experience, and decisions rest on what is observed. Expect questions on the three pillars, transparency, inspection and adaptation, and how they depend on each other; on complex work, where more is unknown than known; and on why Scrum is a deliberately incomplete framework, not a methodology.
The pillars are not interchangeable: without transparency, inspection misleads and adaptation rests on wrong information. Inspection is frequent but must not hinder the work. Adaptation happens as soon as possible once a deviation is found, not at the next milestone. A fixed up-front plan or a hardening Sprint is never the empirical answer.
What are the three pillars of empirical process control?

A question from the bank with its answer and the reasoning behind it. Every practice question comes with an explanation like this one.
Which statement best describes empirical process control?
- AFollowing a detailed upfront plan
- BMaking decisions based on observation and experience(correct answer)
- CUsing mathematical models to predict outcomes
- DApplying traditional project management techniques
Why
Empirical process control relies on transparency, inspection, and adaptation based on observed reality rather than theoretical predictions (Scrum Guide 2020, Theory section).
